CBT COURSE
The Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course is a structured programme of instruction, practice and assessment for anyone wishing to ride a scooter or geared motorbike. It’s the first legal step to getting on two wheels, and by law, must be completed before you can ride on the road using ‘L’ plates.
You must be at least 16 years old to ride a 49cc scooter or 17 years old for a 125cc motorbike. Don’t worry if you’ve never ridden before, our CBT courses are designed specifically for complete beginners.
Your instructor will guide you through every stage of the course at your pace. There’s no formal test at the end – the aim is to ensure you’re safe, confident and knowledgeable before heading out on the road. Most CBT courses take a full day, but this can vary depending on individual progress.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
1. Valid photocard driving licence or provisional licence
2. A screenshot/printout of your driver record. Available via the GOV.UK website.
3. Suitable clothing – jeans and a pair of study ankle protective boots (e.g a walking boot). Joggers and steel toe caps aren't accepted clothing.

Aidan recently completed his CBT test, and we couldn’t be happier with the service. His instructor, Martin, was absolutely brilliant throughout. He was patient, understanding, and really put Aidan at ease from the moment they started. Martin took the time to explain everything clearly and made sure Aidan felt confident and comfortable before moving on. His teaching style was calm and supportive, which really helped Aidan relax and enjoy the experience instead of feeling nervous. By the end of the session, Aidan was not only competent but genuinely excited about getting out on the road. We’d highly recommend this CBT centre and especially Martin if you’re looking for a friendly, professional, and encouraging instructor. Thank you for making Aidan’s first steps in motorcycling such a positive one!Posted on Cyrus Ng31/10/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Rob is an exceptionally patient tutor who guided me throughout the CBT course. As I am from Hong Kong, it took me some time to adapt to using English, but he was always patient and supportive in helping me improve.Posted on Susan Collier26/10/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tony is the best instructor at RJH by a country mile. Passed my full licence and really happy with his guidance. Had some training off other instructors but nowhere near the calibre of Tony. If you want the best ask for Tony. Thanks so much Tony you truly are the best......Posted on Lewis Corcoran21/10/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The CBT instructor Luke was brilliant, really clear, easy to talk too and made coming and doing the training a real pleasure. Will definitely come back to complete my training soon.Posted on Hubert Kosc14/10/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Couldn’t recommend RJH Motorbike Training enough! Just passed my full license today after going from pretty much zero bike experience to a full pass in under a month. Huge thanks to Gareth and Scott - both amazing instructors who were patient, clear, and full of good tips that made everything click. Also a big shoutout to Emma in the office, who was super helpful and quick to answer any questions I had, and Darius, who greeted me before both exams and gave me great advice that really helped settle the nerves. Honestly, the whole team at RJH are brilliant - professional, friendly, and clearly passionate about what they do. Would 100% recommend them to anyone looking to get on two wheels!
