CBT COURSE
The Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course is a structured programme of instruction, practice and assessment for anyone wishing to ride a scooter or geared motorbike. It’s the first legal step to getting on two wheels, and by law, must be completed before you can ride on the road using ‘L’ plates.
You must be at least 16 years old to ride a 49cc scooter or 17 years old for a 125cc motorbike. Don’t worry if you’ve never ridden before, our CBT courses are designed specifically for complete beginners.
Your instructor will guide you through every stage of the course at your pace. There’s no formal test at the end – the aim is to ensure you’re safe, confident and knowledgeable before heading out on the road. Most CBT courses take a full day, but this can vary depending on individual progress.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
1. Valid photocard driving licence or provisional licence
2. A screenshot/printout of your driver record. Available via the GOV.UK website.
3. Suitable clothing – jeans and a pair of study ankle protective boots (e.g a walking boot). Joggers and steel toe caps aren't accepted clothing.
4. Make sure too you have a basic understanding of the Highway Code and road signs

Absolutely fantastic day out with Luke getting through the CBT. Went through all the gear and controls before getting out on to the training area. Then had a good couple of hours out on the road getting up to speed and negotiating road conditions. Very well paced training, patient and professional instructor. Looking forward to continuing on to the DAS.Posted on Oliver S14/03/2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I've just passed my MOD 2 today in Darwen. I've been training with Tony at RJH - I had no motorbike experience when I started and he got me through it from the start. Tony makes you feel so at ease, he's an excellent trainer and knows everything there is to know - it isn't easy but so worth it in the end. Keep up the good work Tony. Thank you for having faith in us new starters.Posted on Martin Stamper08/03/2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Absolutely fantastic day with Martin going through a CBT. First experience of riding a bike with gears with a view to completing my full license in the future. Martin was knowledgeable, engaging, totally encouraging and made the experience for me and my lad. Could not recommend RJH enough.
